The New Twenty follows a group of friends approaching their landmark 30th birthdays. Successful engaged couple Julie and Andrew emotionally support their less thriving friends, including Julie’s gay brother Tony, the overweight and lonely Ben (also gay), and Felix, whose drug habit is getting out of control. Living in hard-nosed Manhattan, the friends go through a series of professional and personal struggles, and reveal that sometimes life, and friendship, isn’t as simple as we hope. The script supplies quick and witty dialogue, and the cast excels in the capable hands of director Chris Mason Johnson who picked up a best first time director award for The New Twenty at the Ft Launderdale international film festival.

Life takes a funny turn for teenage Tabby Fleece and her family in this quirky and enjoyable modern fairytale, by first time director Nancy Kissam. Tabby’s long suffering mother Anora dreams of escaping her abusive husband and apathetic teenage kids. The arrival of the attractive and mysterious beauty Imogene at the house next door sets in place a voyage of discovery for Anora, and places the entire family on a path to a better life. Featuring playful observations on the United States heartland culture, and a cast of eccentric and memorable characters, Drool’s deadpan humour and style was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film festival.
