USA / 2009 / Colour / 94min
Director: H.P. Mendoza
Cast: L.A. Renigen, Mike Curtis, Theresa Navarro, Aaron Zaragoza, E.S. Park

An all singing, all dancing musical that captures the essence of the San Franciso art scene, Fruitfly is the directorial debut of HP Mendoza, the performer and artiste behind the creation of the critically acclaimed Colma: The Musical in 2006. Fruitfly brings together many of the same faces from Colma to tell the tale of Bethesda, a adopted Filipina-American performance artist on a quest to find her birth mother. Arriving in San Fransciso to share a communal apartment with a ragtag bunch of artist, she is frustratingly branded a fag-hag! Nonetheless, she sings and dances her way through a visually inspirational and musically arresting film that will have you tapping your toes in appreciation.

Dose Yul

In Tagalog with English Subtitles
Philippines / 2009 / Colour / 86min
Director: Senedy Que
Cast: Yul Servo, Fritz Chavez, Emilio Garcia, Irma Adlawan
(Director Attend)

Controversial and shocking, Dose (tagalong for “12”) deals with the unsettling theme of pedophilia, as seen through the eyes of the 12 year old victim. Relocating from the rural poverty he has known for most of his life, Edy moves to his weathly aunt’s house in Manila. An effeminate boy obsessed with the dancing divas of the movies, he is befriended by Danny, a lonely 40 year old gardener. Screenwriter and first time director Senedy Que creates a nostalgic and sentimental story from the dark material. His sympathetic treatment of the characters treatment invites us to break free of the prejudice of age and gender, while bringing the film to its disturbing climax.

BOY 1 copy

In Tagalog with English Subtitles
Philippines / 2009 / Colour / 79min
Director: Auraeus Solito
Cast: Aeious Asin, Aries Pena, Madeline Nicolas, Noni Buencamino
( Feature to be preceded by Protect Me From What I Want / 13min)

(同場加影愛爾蘭短片「保護色 」)

Worth seeing just for the “prolonged and explicit” love scene that caused the Singapore film board to ban the film earlier this year, Boy is a tender and heartfelt story of growing up and falling in love. Poetic student Boy begins to explore his sexuality, and wonders into a macho dance bar. Here he finds Aries, a country boy turned go go dancer, living on the wrong side of the tracks. By pooling his spare cash and even selling his prized comic books, he saves enough to pay the dancer’s bar fine and take him home for the controversial love scene. A moving love story that also takes geo-political issues onboard, Boy is the work of award-winning Filipino director Auraeus Solito.
