Foreword
The press asked me if it’s important for Hong Kong to have The Lesbian & Gay Film Festival? My answer is a big YES! Why? Who doesn’t enjoy watching good movies? And apart from entertaining people, movies can also educate. Our films show diverse backgrounds and stories from many different countries. They tell you what it means to be gay in all sorts of countries around the world. After watching the screeners for the festival this year, I felt so lucky to be born somewhere in the world where I can be openly gay. One of the films that touched me the most was the documentary Out in the Silence, which is about an openly gay teenager and a lesbian in a small town in the US who have to deal with bullying and religious condemnation.
In the US several gay teens recently committed suicide after suffering bullying and abuse. Out in the Silence is one of our films which can educate teenagers who are feeling alone and going through a miserable time. This year we have a special discount for students. We hope the films inspire them. We have to let gay teens know that “It Gets Better”.
HKLGFF has been very high profile and much in the public eye for the past few years. We have nothing to hide and are delighted to see straight people at our shows as the standard of the films improves. Everyone is welcome. And this year in particular we are putting the boy’s and girl’s opening galas in the same cinema, so it will be like a mini Gay Pride. Come celebrate the biggest LGBT festival of the year with us!
Sadly, this is the second year we will be missing our amazing founder. We miss you every single day, darling Wouter. See the rest of you at the cinema!
